The History of Super Bowl Rematches
What happens when teams face off in the big game multiple times?
The Kansas Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl again. They defeated the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game, 32-29 this past Sunday. They will be heading to the big game for the fifth time in six years. If Kansas City wins Super Bowl LIX, they will be the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls. With a win on February 9th, the Chiefs will also secure 4 Super Bowl titles in 6 seasons. That’s only been done one other time in NFL history. The Pittsburgh Steelers won 4 Super Bowls in 6 seasons spanning from 1974 to 1979. The Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL’s biggest contest next month. It will be a rematch of Super Bowl LVII which took place at the conclusion of the 2022 NFL season. Kansas City won that game 38-35. That got me thinking about Super Bowl rematches. After nearly 60 iterations of the NFL’s championship game, how many times have the same two teams faced off against each other? What were the results of those contests? I’ll answer those questions and more in this week’s article.
